In January 2019, three serendipitous things happened to two complete strangers from different countries and opposite sides of the continent: (1) Toronto-based writer, Anne Fenn, had an article published online about her experience of losing her speaking voice for a year; (2) Anne announced her desire to write a musical and find a musician with whom to collaborate; and (3) Deena Kamm, singer/songwriter/vocal teacher from Bend, Oregon, who’d spent most of her career helping people find their voice and wanted to write a musical about it, came across Anne's article.
Anne put her voice out there and Deena heard it.
In May 2019, Deena and Anne met in person at the Getty Museum in Los Angeles to see if they got along (see photo). Not only did they connect like old friends, they realized they wanted to tell the same story.
“Voiceless” is the story of a woman who loses and finds her voice, physically and metaphorically. Told by two women whose connection to the subject matter is intrinsic to who they are.
